Choosing a calling plan is the next step you need to consider. Decide who you will be calling, when you will be calling, and for how long. Most plans come with a block of minutes. The more minutes the higher the cost. Some plans differentiate between daytime, nighttime, and weekend minutes. On some plans nighttime or weekend minutes are free or at a reduced rate. Pay attention to what time periods are considered nights and weekends, some plans start as early as 6pm and as late as 9 PM.

One new feature being offered is carryover minutes. This option allows you to carryover your unused minutes from one billing cycle to the next. Usually this feature is slightly more expensive than standard plans but should save you from paying for extra minutes. If you don't choose carryover minutes be sure to give yourself slightly more minutes than you think you will need. Minutes outside of those in your plan can often be very expensive.

Another factor to consider is where you will be calling. If you are calling from one area code to another, you may be making a long distance call. Some plans will bill these calls at a higher rate, so make sure you choose a calling plan that matches and accommodates your calling patterns.

One final point to remember is you will be billed "airtime" for both incoming and outgoing calls.
