Carat weight is the third of the four C's. Carat is quite simply the weight of the diamond. One carat is one-fifth of a gram or 1/142 of an ounce. Carats are divided into 100 points, if you have a ½ carat diamond it weighs 75 points or 0.75 carats.

The size of a diamond directly affects its price. Larger stones are much more rare and therefore more expensive. You should also know that as the size of the stone increases the price increases geometrically. For example a 1-carat diamond will be much more than double the price of a ½ carat diamond.

When purchasing a diamond make sure you know the exact weight. Many retailers will round off the weight or give you approximate weight values.
