A direct view TV is still the most popular choice on the market. They have been around for a very long time and in Mom's opinion have a lot going for them. Now don't be like your Aunt Eunice and make a snappy decision - hear Mom out on this one. Unless you are going to want a TV over 36" a direct view TV is going to be cheaper than any other comparably equipped viewing choice. The main reason is they have been around a long time, and manufacturers are able to produce them very efficiently. A Direct view TV will also give you a high quality picture over the widest range of viewing conditions. It doesn't matter if the room is bright or dark. Direct view TV's are also very good at reproducing dark scenes. This is an important consideration if you watch a lot of programs with dark scenes. Another advantage is Direct view TV's are viewable across a wide range of angles, not just head on.Now with all of the things direct view TV's are good at there are a few things they aren't good at. If you were paying attention to mom before you know Direct view TV's are an economical choice over 36", however they are available in sizes up to 40". The next thing to know is direct view TV's are big and heavy. So if you have a small room and want a 36" direct view TV it's going to need a fairly big stand or enclosure and is going to way quite a bit. If you already have HDTV or are planning to get it in the next few years make sure you get a TV that's HDTV compatible. This usually increases the price. If you are really interested in HDTV you may be better off with a newer Plasma Screen TV. Now on to Flat Screen TV
