An LCD flat panel TV is the first flat screen TV Mom is going to tell you about. If you have a digital watch, a hand held PDA, or a laptop computer you already own an LCD flat panel display. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. LCD displays have grown in size, shape, color, and clarity over the years. Today they are a lot more sophisticated than those digital watches Mom had to buy you kids when you were in grade school back in the 70's.

Now one of the advantages a flat panel LCD has is excellent color reproduction. All of the colors of the spectrum from dark purples and blues through red, yellows, and orange are accurately displayed and reproduced. Additionally LCD flat panel displays are clear, clean, and crisp. The makes and LCD display particularly well suited for HDTV. Next LCD displays are particularly good at displaying images from a computer or gaming console. Additionally LCD displays are immune to the effects of burn in.

Now as Mom likes to say there is no such ting as a free lunch, so there are some disadvantages to LCD flat panel displays. The first of these is size. The largest size you can get a reasonably priced LCD display is 24". As the size of an LCD display increases the price increases geometrically. For example for the same price as an 18" flat panel LCD display, you could get a 32" direct view TV. Probably the biggest downside for an LCD display is it can only be viewed from head on. To see an example of how the picture degrades try tilting the display on a laptop computer. If you view a lot of very bright or very black images they will not be well represented on an LCD flat screen TV.
