Plasma Screen TVAdvice and Information on the Internetgottaaskyourmom.comPlasma Screen TVYou are here: Home > Home Theater > Plasma Screen TV

Now you probably hear a lot about how great a plasma screen TV display is. Well Mom can tell you a lot of what you hear is true. A plasma screen TV is made of millions of tiny little chambers that are filled with gas. The chambers are sandwiched between two flat glass panels. An electrical grid causes the chambers to ionize (the ionized gas is a plasma). The plasma will cause a phosphor on the outside of one of the panels to glow a specific color. Now that we got that out of the way we can talk about what makes a plasma screen TV so great.

One of the most attractive things about plasma screen TV's is their size. They are available in 42, 50, 55, and 60" displays. Even with the size plasma screen TV's are usually between 3" - 6" in depth. So compared to a direct view TV they take up a lot less room. Because they are so thin they also way considerably less and can usually be mounted directly on the wall without and sophisticated hardware. So you can get a really big display that doesn't eat up half of the room the way a direct view TV or rear projection screen TV does (more about projection screens later). The next best thing about a plasma screen TV is the resolution. Everything except the low-end plasma screens have a higher resolution that makes them especially well suited for HDTV. Now if you didn't have potatoes growing in your ears you remember when mom told you how plasma screens are made up of phosphors lit up by ionized gas. This makes the displays on a plasma screen clean, clear, crisp, and bright. Next plasma screen TV's are very good at displaying images from a computer or gaming system. Finally a plasma screen TV is viewable from a wide range of viewing angles in the same way as a direct view TV.

Now before you hop in the car and run down to your local electronics store there are some disadvantages you should know about. The first thing you will encounter when shopping for a plasma screen TV is sticker shock. A good quality plasma screen TV with the most common features is going to start at $2,500 - $3,500. A large or higher quality plasma screen may cost between $6,000 - $10,000. This may be out of the budget for a lot of people. The next thing to be aware of is plasma screens are susceptible to burn in. Even though they are well suited to gaming displays you may not want to hook up your gaming system and risk burn-in on your $8,000 display. You should also know plasma screen TV's have a limited lifespan. Most will come with a half brightness specification. A simple explanation of this value is it is the number of hours before the brightness of the display is half of what it was when you bought the TV. The final fact you need to know is color reproduction is not 100% accurate. This is especially noticeable towards the red end of the spectrum. Now mom knows those boys and girls in the white lab coats are working to fix this.

Now despite these shortcomings Mom still thinks if a plasma screen is in your budget it really is the best option. You can get a really big display in a really small space with a really good quality that is HDTV compatible. This makes them an excellent choice for a home theater but not for the kids to watch their Disney or Barney tapes. Okay lets review what we learned about home theater TV's.
