Okay there are some very important points to understand when you are trying to understand TV screen size. There is something called aspect ratio, this defines the width of the screen in relation to the height of the screen. TV screen sizes come in two aspect ratios 4:3 and 16:9. A 4:3 aspect ratio is a slightly wider than taller size. This was the size you had when you were a kid and is still the most common size on the market. The newer aspect ration is 16:9, this is known as wide screen. Now lets talk about TV sizes. A TV screen is measured diagonally from one corner to another. Now when you measure diagonally on 30" TV the size of the screen will change depending on the aspect ratio. Using the 30" TV as an example 4:3 screen will be 24" wide and 18" tall. While a 30" screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio will be just over 26" wide by 14 3/4" high.See how the aspect ratio can completely affect the size of the TV screen. Okay Honey let's talk about choosing the proper size. Now your cousin Billy Joe will tell you bigger is always better. I think you need to listen to what Mom on this. If you have an 8' x 10' room do you think you really need a 60" display? You don't need mom to tell you it will be a little overwhelming. However if you have a 15' x 20' room a 17" display just isn't going to cut it. Now when you were a kid mom was always telling you not to sit too close to the TV, well it's the truth. You should always be at least 6' away from the TV. The largest size TV you should have for a 6-foot viewing distance is 27". If you were to move back to 8 feet away and you can go to 32". After 8 feet for every foot you add you can add up to 4" in screen size.

If you are thinking about a TV 50" or larger you should be at least 12 feet away from the TV. Now don't get all upset you don't have to be exact on this one just close. Now that we've talked about size lets go over some TV Features.
