Nonstick cookware is the most popular cookware on the market today. The main selling point is the ease of maintenance, some warm water and a little soap is all that is needed. The technology used in manufacturing nonstick finishes has continued to evolve since it was first introduced. Modern nonstick coatings are more resistant to metal utensils, and will not peel. It is still possible to scratch or gouge the finish though. So mom recommends using wooden, plastic or nylon utensils when working with nonstick cookware. Everyone should have some nonstick cookware, but it's not suited for every application, such as deglazing or searing.
