Now if you were paying attention before you'll remember I told you the sizes of a satellite dish has gotten smaller, MUCH smaller. In fact most Satellite TV dishes are between 18 and 24 inches in diameter. They come in two shapes, round and oval. If you are going to be using DirecTV go with the oval instead of the round, the round shape can't pick up the HDTV signals. If you are using Dish Network you'll need a second dish to get HDTVAnother very important thing to consider about satellite dishes is location, location, location. You are going to have to find a location that has a clear unobstructed view to the south. Now even though these new dishes are smaller try to be courteous and find someplace that won't upset your neighbors. Now if you want to get technical, they can't actually stop you from putting it wherever you want to. The only exceptions are historical districts or where life safety becomes and issue. In fact in 2001 the FCC passed a law passed a law to that effect, which you can read about if you likeAttached to the side of this dish there are three arms, they come to center of the dish and are attached to an oblong shaped piece. This is called a Low Noise Blocker or LNB. The device serves two purposes, first it filters out the undesirable noise in the signal. Secondly usually you are going to need one LNB per receiver. This is something you will want to go over with your provider. Some dishes have double or even triple LNB's and this will vary from system to system. Now don't be a cheapskate like your Uncle Bill. Let's face it you are going to have more than one TV in your house, so spend a few extra bucks and get a dish that has more than one LNB, you'll thank your Mom for it later. The last thing to think about with your dish is installation. Now lets face honey, you're not the handiest person in the world, but you probably could install it. But installing it is the easy part do you think you could align it properly? Many new packages come with discounts or rebates for the installation price. This really is something you should leave to the professionals.
