Now unless you're going to open a vegetarian restaurant in Thailand and rescue injured turtles with the weirdo college roommate of your chances are you'll only have two satellite TV providers to choose from. One is Dish Network (Echostar) and the other is DirecTV. Both companies use a digital signal. This has advantages over the signal that was used years ago. First it allows the service provider to compress the signal and give you a clearer picture. Second the dish can be much smaller now. Third is introduction of HDTV. Now there are only a handful of channels doing this now but trust Mom, HDTV is going to be BIG in a few years.

So what advantages does satellite TV have over analog cable?

If you are going to access the pay-per-view programs your receiver is going to need to be connected to a phone line. Under normal operating conditions the receiver will "call" out and connect to the provider in the middle of the night, so it doesn't interfere with your normal phone usage. Speaking of which, it would be nice if you picked up the phone and called your mother every once in while.
