A saute pan resembles a large deep frying pan. The difference is in the angle of the sidewalls. They are straight on a saute pan and flared or angled on a skillet. A saute pan usually has a loop handle. This is helpful when you are moving something from the stovetop to the oven. A 3 quart size is probably too small unless you are usually cooking for 1 or 2 people. You will want at least a 5 or 6 quart. You also want this pan to come with a lid
