Stockpots are deep vessels usually used for cooking liquid or mostly liquid foods (like gumbo). They run as small as 4 quarts in size and as large as 30 quarts or larger (for making things like homemade beer). 8 quarts is the most common size. If you cook a lot of soups or other liquids you will want to have a 6 quart and a 10 or 12 quart. You don't need more than two stockpots, trust mom on this one.
