Now Mom knows one of the most misunderstood things on the Internet is traffic. The one thing you hear talked about is hits. We're going to have to take a step back to get a clear understanding of what a hit is, so pay attention this is a very important part to understand. Each element on a web page will generate a hit. So if you have a page with text (the amount of text doesn't matter) it will generate 1 hit. If you add a picture to the page it will generate 2 hits, 1 for the page and 1 for the image. If you have a web page with two images it will generate three hits, one for the page and two for the images. Now every time a web page is viewed it will generate the corresponding number of hits. So say you have two websites the first has one page with one image, the second has one page with three images. Now for the page on each website is viewed 10 times how many hits does that generate.

(1 page + 1 image) * 10 page views = 20 hits
(1 page + 3 images) * 10 page views = 40 hits

Now if you were paying attention to what Mom was saying you see that the second website has twice as many hits even though the pages were viewed the same number of times.

Mom says the most important thing to understand is bandwidth. The bandwidth you use depends on the sizes of your files and images. Every letter on your page makes the file a byte bigger. Now don't really let this worry you 1 byte is really small, and without text on the page your page is blank. The next thing contributes to file size is the HTML code. Now Mom can't go into the details of HTML coding here but usually this a not an area for concern. The largest contributing factor to file size is number and size of the images on page. Generally speaking the larger and more visually complex the image the larger the file size will be. To find the sizes of the individual files you can look at the size column in the folder or directory. You take individual files sizes and add them together to get the total file size. Now usually a website will have more than one page so you the best idea is to find the average size. For the next step you are going to have estimate how many visitors you are going to have and how many pages they are going to view. If this is new website these number will most likely be guess, so Mom advises you to guess high, generally 20 - 30% more than you think. So you take the page size, multiply it by the number of visitors and the number of pages. See the example below:

Now Mom simplified these numbers to make the complications easier, but you get the idea. Once your website has been running for a month you will have a better idea of your traffic. Most shared hosting packages will give you between 3 - 40 GB of bandwidth monthly. Just make sure you give yourself more bandwidth than you think you will need, this will give you a little room let your website grow. Make sure you know what the charge is for extra bandwidth if you go over your monthly allowance. On to Disk Space.
